Last night we had a blast going climbing for the first time. We were taught how to climb using both auto belay and standard belay. If you have no clue what I'm saying, don't worry -- I didn't know those climber terms until last night.
Here are a couple quick definitions:
Auto Belay - is climbing assisted by an automated device that eliminates the need for a human belayer.
Belayer - is the person on the ground who controls the tension and slack of the rope as you climb and come back down.
Once we were all set with climbing gear and a staffer explained how to get hooked to the auto belay, it was test time.. So here I go stepping up to be the first climber. I felt confident until I realized I was dangling 50 feet in the air. Sadly, I knew that the only way down was to trust the auto belay and let go. Yep, I was terrified and this was the first time I realized I was scared of heights. According to Mitch and Jord my face immediately turned red and I started to make my ugly cry face. Oops, why'd I go first?! This was dumb. I held on tight to the rocks for a few more seconds and realized I had to push off in order to get back down. Looking back now, all I can do is laugh about it!
Thankfully after that we learned how to belay. I thought having a human belayer was far more fun and not near as scary! I can't wait to visit Climb Nashville again!
Thanks Denny for teaching us the ropes! :)
